The ottoman is an interesting piece of furniture which is easily dismissed a a mere accessory. The word means a number of things, most commonly we mean a low footstool of the type accompanying a reclining seat but the word can also be used to mean a low bench, a couch, a divan or a storage box for linen typically used in the bedroom.

The ottoman gets its name from the Ottoman Empire a multi-ethnic state that existed from the late thirteenth until the early twentieth century. It is an empire which has varied in make-up and influence but it includes modern Turkey and other middle Eastern , Mediterranean and North African areas. The word "ottoman" was used to describe furniture items brought back to the West by tourists or designed to have similar appearance.
